Making A Pillowcase In A Tube

I promised to put these instructions on the blog and am late, late, late.  So, I apologize!  There's still plenty of time to make pillowcases for the holidays, so here we go:

1.  We pre-wash and press our fabrics.  You do not have to cut any specific size pieces for the body and cuff, but we do tear off wide selvedges.

2.  Make your accent strip the width you desire.  We usually cut our strip anywhere from 1 1/4" to 1 3/4" wide; fold in half lengthwise (wrong sides together) and press.  Remember to press across the ironing board to keep your strip straight.

3.  Lay the body fabric right side up with the edge that will be attached to the cuff at the top.  This picture is sideways (sorry!)  The edge that will join the cuff is to the left near the ironing board.
4.  Lay the folded accent strip on the body piece matching raw edges. (Gold accent strip at top)
5. Lay the cuff fabric right side down on top of the accent strip and body fabric, matching raw edges. (There may be more body fabric than cuff fabric, especially if you are using a directional fabric in the body and have turned the fabric - this will be cut away.)
6. Fold body fabric up and wrap the cuff fabric around the body fabric to form a tube that encases the body fabric and accent strip. (The photo below shows the body fabric (red) being folded up to go underneath the white cuff fabric.)
7.  Make sure all of your raw edges are even and pin.  Stitch with a 1/4" seam forming a tube.
8.  Pull body fabric through the end of the tube.  Press.

9.  Fold pillowcase with wrong sides together to stitch French Seams (seams that enclose all raw edges).   Pin. Stitch with 1/4" - 3/8" wide seam.  Trim any extra fabric or wide selvedges.

10.  Turn pillowcase wrong side out and press.  Stitch the seams again using a wide enough seam to encase the previous seam.  Turn right side out and press.
